Church
on the Mall (COTM) is unique! Our location at Plymouth Meeting Mall in suburban
Philadelphia,
since 1966, makes us the oldest continuously operating marketplace ministry in
the country of any denomination. These characteristics make COTM a truly remarkable
place, providing us opportunities to minister to the needs of our congregation
and neighborhood. We provide a spiritual home to our members, offering Sunday
worship and Christian Education programs for children and adults and
participation in ecumenical services with the local Plymouth-Whitemarsh Ministerium. Our presence in the Mall allows us to serve
the community for counseling and outreach. Our church doors are open and
volunteers staff the front desk daily, giving Mall visitors and employees a
place for prayer and assistance. Our premises house a Christian counseling center
(The Dialogue Center) for clergy and congregations in need; one of their staff
has served as our Parish Associate. Rental of the church sanctuary and rooms
provide approximately 50% of the support for our building maintenance and
mission programs. Tenants are varied and include hospice groups, Weight
Watchers, self-help organizations, Presbytery Committees, and dance
organizations. Pioneer Chinese Fellowship shares our space Sunday afternoons
and Avodat Israel Congregation (a Messianic congregation) meets Friday. In
addition, we serve as a polling place at election time and as a Red Cross Blood
Collection Center. We have worked through a
Mall fire and one major Mall renovation project and will be looking to do so
again when as new construction project has begun as of summer ‘07.
